about

Bogland, TBTP’s 6th release, sees a radical change in musical direction.

This album was made at a difficult time, and reflects that. I was living at one end of the country, in north county Dublin, and working in the south of the country. I would stay with family during the week and return home at the weekends. My father was diagnosed with MS, and his physical ability deteriorated quickly, so I would spend my week day evenings helping my parents adjust to their changing home situation. I never had a great relationship with my father, so would eventually retreat to my room, making music, headphones on, trying to keep to myself. This music arose out of that time, my attempt to make music within confines.

Eschewing previous work drenched in fuzz pedals and effects, Bogland focuses much more directly on clean – if still loud – guitar based work. The work here, not surprisingly, results in a series of shorter pieces, juxtaposing guitar based explorations against sounds created using largely free, visual-based apps on an ipad. This much simpler and direct approach also uses the voice across several tracks.

With the restriction of trying to play a 'cleaner' guitar I set myself a challenge of trying not to play anything resembling chords, recognisable melody or anything smelling of a solo... when things began to feel too familiar I'd force myself to do something else. It built from there.

about

To Blacken the Pages

Based in Ireland, TBTP's first release in 2007 was the 47 minute epic 'The Urgency' - which Julian Cope described as: 'this awe-inspiring solo Sunn Mustang guitar-fest manages to invoke that same exhilarating Zoroastrian burning as early Ash Ra Tempel, without even once sounding less than entirely itself... the music of To Blacken The Pages dissolves linear time and swallows all misery whole.' ... more
